The Honest Truth: A True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
A True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is definitely raw and breathtakingly honest, but it is also a bit profane at times. Books like ATDPTI should be allowed to be in schools and libraries due to its high quality literature. Personally, I believer High School students should be able to read ATDPTI in school without any restrictions.“Students have a right to read high quality literature of this sort, and as educators you have an obligation to introduce them to books that are read in high schools around the country. Students are placed in a distinct disadvantage if they are denied this opportunity. “We strongly urge you to restore the book without restrictions on its use.” (Publishers Weekly) Certain things other people are objecting to is besides the point. There is a bigger picture to ATDPTI.
“This book in a nutshell is my hope. It’s not about giving up. It’s about not letting people tell you you’re not worth it.” (Dakota Freeze, HS Student) The authors make it very clear that they are trying to inspire the people who read their book. High school student Dakota Freeze is against the ban and supported keeping the book. She said her ambition is to leave Stockton and get into politics and the law (Dakota Freeze) Sherman Alexie inspires not only Dakota Freeze but also many other high school students who stand strong against the ban. Dakota is very passionate about how the book inspires her that she wants to get into the logistics and taking this issue to the school board. Do you think removing the book from high school curriculum and libraries is going to stop eager high school students from reading books like ATDPTI. It is the boards sheer refusal to listen to educators, reviewers and especially students speak about the educational merits of ATDPTI that harm Stockton- not the book. But wait there is a small problem, the parent who complained about the book was the parent of an elementary school student, not a high school student. The book was taken out of the high school’s curriculum and was removed from the HIGH SCHOOL’S library. If ATDPTI has a strong impact on HS students whether the book is banned or not, students are most likely still going to find a way to read the book. ATDPTI clearly impacts the HS students. And I can personally attest to that myself.
Not only have books inspired HS in the Stockton School District. It has also inspired me in many ways. I love Sherman Alexie’s high quality writing techniques, Alexie really digs deep with a lot of real world issues that young adults face. “A review in NY times called it “a gem of a book.. heartbreaking, funny, and beautifully written.” (NY Times) If we are not to strangle the free mind and its source to teach youth to discount important principles of our government as mere platitudes.”ATDPTI addresses issues such as gay bashing and alcoholism an Alexie provides a strong counter argument for both. These are issues that need resolution in our schools and our world in general. There is a certain boundary for sheltering young adults from real world issues.
“Although there are some reasons that this book is banned (sexual content, racism, abuse, violence…) children have access to all of these anyway. Ads containing sexual content, racism, abuse and violence are shown on TV everyday, and children do see them. For example,Victoria Secret. All of their ads are about sex or trying to make girls look sexy by buying their products. Both sex and violence are also on tv shows like Glee. This is a popular tv show. Children have access to the topics discussed in this book even if they do not have access to the book itself.” "When people are afraid, they become more conservative and reject changes," she says. I believe that High School’s should be able to read ATDPTI even if they may be a little hesitant. It is very good to explore change and learn from change as well. ATDPTI is a perfect book for High School age students to read especially with the society we live in it is a very demanding society. Not only are students at Stockton High inspired by Sherman Alexie’s novel- I am as well. ATDPTI is a vital book for High School students. And I believe the book; A True Diary of a Part-Time Indian should be available for all students at Stockton High- and High School’s worldwide.
Not only should high schools in Stockton, Missouri be able to read ATDPTI-but high schools all over the world. Sherman Alexie’s novel is a perfect example of a breathtakingly inspiring book. Not only is ATDPTI a novel that contains high quality literature but it is also a book that should not be banned for high school aged students. Many students are inspired by Alexie’s novel due to it being so honest about real problems that we face everyday. He gives many high school students hope. What is funny to me is that the mother who complained about banning the book was the mother of an elementary school student. And yet the school board continued to ban the book even though it had nothing to do with a parent of a high school student. That seems a little unfair to me. This book is so much more than violence, poor language, and sexual content. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend that you do. “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is banned for several reasons including sexual content and plain truth about school. I think it shouldn’t be banned because we say and think way worse things than what’s in that book.” (Austin, HS student) Ponder on that thought for a moment and give this book a chance. You will definitely fall in love with this book.
