What happens when a patients insurance doesn't accept something you have given in a prescription for something like a splint or bandage, etc..? What do you do ?
Well I have been in YLHC (Young Leaders in Healthcare) since 10th grade. Some of the things I learn there are also things I see often in the office. Having a connection with Dr.Kaska from YLHC is what gave me this internship.
Even though Dr.Kaska is a surgeon he is very thrifty. If he can get a deal/discount on something that is a $1.75 he will. The other day when I had to make some calls for him for some services we needed for the office. The first thing he told me to ask everyone of them was is there a way we can have that service for a cheaper price? If they say no, his immediate answer is, well I guess I will start researching your competitors and call them. He is a bargain shopper and will absolutely take no for an answer! He is so funny. Everyday in the office is different. I have so many stories because as I said every single day is completely different. I love being Dr.Kaska's intern.

One of the most important skills in being a doctor is time management. Everyday I am becoming more time efficient. Dr.Kaska is always there to help me with that. I hope by the end of my internship I will be a time management master. Another skill I am working on developing is being a very good multi-tasker. This is something that Dr.Kaska is absolutely amazing at. I learn from him everyday on how to become a better multi-tasker. Another skill I have been developing is being a very good note taker, not only has Dr.Kaska but also some of my colleagues have helped me learn the easiest way to take good notes. I know I will learn so much more. This internship is so satisfying.
The office is very personal with everyone who works there. I don't know if it has anything to do with it being a private practice and only having one doctor. I really like how that works. It helps you get the most of the internship. I really have learned a lot in the first day of my internship. This internship makes me feel confident in my dream of becoming a doctor. I really learned a lot of things and can't wait to learn more about what the nitty gritty is in being a doctor.
When I first walked in the office, I was so nervous because I thought the other people that work there that I have not met yet, would be very judgmental and not like me. Once I got really comfortable with them I wanted to keep working and not leave. The other people that work there are so helpful and nice. I really enjoyed my first day with them! I also learned a lot of things from them too.
Well I didn't think it would be as hands on as it was the first day. It was really nice to be exposed to that though. Also Dr.Kaska has a very dry personality which I like. Because for some people it could come off as harsh but for me he wants the best for you in the end. In the end he wants me to succeed. He gives constructive feedback. I get to experience so many different aspects of being a doctor and having your own private practice.
I am very excited for what Dr.Kaska has in store for me. He is really trying to expose me to as much possible. This makes me really excited. Because I want to learn as much as I possibly can. I am also pretty excited about my project and what my final product will look like. I am excited about a lot of things! I guess I could say in this situation I am excited for the unknown. I know that each day I come into the office something new will be in store for me,
I am worried that I will make Dr,Kaska not proud, of me and that I won't make a good impression on him. I am worried about screwing something up. Other than that I don't really have any other worries. I am really excited about this whole experience! Something I am a tad worried about is saying something wrong to Dr.Kaska due to his personality that could make something ugly. In the end I cannot control things that are out of my control or be worried about things that have not even happened yet. Mentor #1: Dr.Kaska (Orthopedic Surgeon)
What should I know about you before I start working here? Know that i am going to teach you more about how to be successful in life than you learned in the last 17 years Is there anything you wish you'd realized about the world of work when you were my age? How to manage politics, and physchology of human relations Do you consider a career in this area satisfying? In what ways? My career is great, intellectually, emotionally and physical challanging What is a typical work day like? Every day is different, always changing What other advice do you have about working here? TBA What other personality traits, skills, or knowledge are important here? TBA Mentor #2: Marianne Malek What should I know about you before I start working here? When I met you we discussed that in a law office everything you see or hear about is very confidential and that its essential to keep the information you see private. Also you should know that in both a personal injury law office and a doctor's office, you are dealing with people who are injured and often elderly, so you should speak to them with respect. Is there anything you wish you'd realized about the world of work when you were my age? When I was your age, I wish I realized that people notice things about me and my behavior that even I don't notice. For example, future employers look at how clean and organized an applicant's car is, as this will be reflection of how they treat the office and work area. Also people notice the way you talk and treat others, not just how you treat them. Your future boss will watch how you interact with others and that can influence who you are perceived. Also remember that its better to ask questions and learn early on rather than learning from mistakes in the future. Do you consider a career in this area satisfying? In what ways? Yes, I do- in so many ways. You are helping people get compensated for their injuries and you deal with a system that is so foreign and scary to one-timers who are going through the same thing. What is a typical work day like? Dealing with people, paperwork, and going to court as well as alternate dispute resolution such as mediation and arbitration. What other advice do you have about working here? Just be yourself, ask a lot of questions, speak with respect to the employees as well as clients and patients you meet. What other personality traits, skills, or knowledge are important here? It is important to be curious so you can get the most of the internship. Try to pay attention to as many details as you can. What questions did I not ask yet that I should have? None- I think you covered them all when we met and through this! |
